Microscopic Bioremediation Brings Big Results
When there’s an oil spill on a work site or in the driveway, many people grab a pressure washer or a shovel. While this is a common first instinct, it is entirely wrong.
Physical removal has a place in certain cleanup situations, but it is not the only option. Bioremediation offers another approach: using naturally occurring microorganisms to break down petroleum hydrocarbons at the spill site. While it may sound like something out of a science-fiction novel, microbes have been “eating” oil in nature for millions of years.
OPG+ uses plant-based bioremediation technology to accelerate that natural process and provide effective, on-site spill cleanup.
What Does It Mean When Microbes “Eat” Oil?
Microbes are microscopic organisms found almost everywhere, including water, grass, pavement, and other outdoor environments. Certain microbes can use hydrocarbons (the primary chemical compounds in oil and fuel) as an energy source.
In simple terms, the microbes consume and metabolize the hydrocarbons. During this biological process, complex oil molecules are broken down into simpler byproducts, including carbon dioxide and water. And check this out: petroleum and natural gas are made up of hydrocarbons. It makes them the perfect natural predator for pesky spills.
However, microbes cannot always reach or process a concentrated oil spill efficiently on their own. Thick oil can be toxic, difficult to penetrate, and slow to break down naturally. This is where bioremediation technology can help.
How OPG+ Accelerates the Natural Cleanup Process
The OPG+ bioremediation process helps make spilled oil more accessible to the native microorganisms already present at the site.
The process generally occurs in three stages:
1. The Formula Contacts the Oil
After the spill is assessed and contained, trained technicians apply the OPG+ formula to the affected area. Its biosurfactants begin separating the concentrated oil into much smaller droplets.
Think of it as turning one large meal into many bite-sized pieces.
2. The Oil Becomes More Bioavailable
Breaking the oil into smaller droplets creates more surface area for microbial activity. OPG+ enzymes form binding sites, while nutrients help support the indigenous bacteria surrounding the spill.
This allows the microbes to attach to the hydrocarbons and begin using them as a food source more effectively.
3. Native Microbes Continue the Breakdown
The microbial population grows around the treated oil droplets and metabolizes the hydrocarbons. Under suitable conditions, this process continues until the targeted petroleum contamination has been broken down.
OPG+ does not introduce foreign bacteria into the environment. Instead, the formula supports microorganisms already living at the spill site.
Does the Oil Really Disappear in Real-Time?
The process begins as soon as the OPG+ formula contacts the oil. Changes may become visible quickly as the concentrated oil separates, loses adhesion, and becomes easier for microbes to access.
However, visible disappearance is not the same as complete biological breakdown. The microbes still need time to finish metabolizing the hydrocarbons. The overall timeline can vary based on the type and amount of oil, the affected surface, temperature, moisture, oxygen, and other site conditions.
Follow-up treatments may also be recommended to support continued microbial activity and address lingering staining.
Science vs. Shovels: What Is the Difference?
Traditional spill cleanup often relies on a mix of absorbents, excavation, pressure washing, or hauling contaminated materials to a disposal facility. These methods may
be necessary in some situations, but they can also require additional labor, equipment, transportation, and disposal fees. That all raises the cost of clean up.
Bioremediation is designed to treat suitable spills where they occur. Rather than simply moving petroleum-contaminated waste somewhere else, the process helps native microorganisms break down the hydrocarbons themselves. When needed, we will assist the process by using corn cob absorbent, an all-natural, eco-friendly material.
That can mean less digging, less waste hauling, and less disruption to the surrounding property.
Bioremediation is not appropriate for every spill. Immediate containment, safety precautions, professional assessment, and all applicable reporting requirements must still come first.

Professional Spill Cleanup Backed by Biology
OPG+ provides 24/7 spill cleanup services for oil, gasoline, diesel, hydraulic fluid, grease, and other petroleum-related spills. The Quick Response Team evaluates the material, location, affected surfaces, and surrounding risks before recommending a cleanup approach. OPG+ is especially equipped to assist with smaller, typically unreportable spills.
